“You’re under arrest!” With that, Samuel’s partying takes a quick turn into the unknown. Handcuffed and dragged down the street by a cop was not how he expected to spend Halloween. But this night would be anything but ordinary.
“Sir, you are under arrest!”
A confused Samuel heard those words as he exited a bar off Hamilton Street. There was a cop before him dressed in a uniform, and he had a nightstick at his hip as well as something that looked very much like a gun. Immediately, Samuel felt tremendously anxious. He hadn’t been doing anything wrong, but this cop was arresting him?
Across the street, people in costumes hooted and pointed at them. After all, it was Halloween. Even inside of the gay bar, everyone had been in costume. His lack thereof had been the entire reason that he had left early to begin with, though he was starting to regret it now. As a forty-year-old man that had only recently discovered that he was gay, he deemed himself “out of touch” with the dating and bar going world.
Maybe he was so “out of touch” that he had committed a crime without knowing it.
“Officer,” said Samuel nervously, taking in the man before him, “there must be some mistake. I haven’t done anything wrong, and I–”
“Silence,” demanded the police officer, and Samuel clamped his mouth shut.
As Samuel nervously shuffled his feet, the police officer approached him and walked around him like some sort of dog or predatory animal. He was swinging his nightstick as if it was a play toy, and he was grinning as if he had just busted up a murder. Samuel was practically trembling in his shoes. I have to see my kids, he thought darkly. What would they say if their father was arrested?
He had two kids from a previous marriage, one that had ended as quickly as it had started. His ex-wife had probably realized long before Samuel that he was gay. Now, he had his kids’ full-time while his ex-wife flew around the world for her photo-shoots. Of course, despite the fact that she rarely saw their children, she had wanted to take them trick-or-treating even though Samuel had been more than up for the job.
“Please, officer,” murmured Samuel sadly. “Tell me what I did wrong.”
The officer did not reply to this. Instead, he surveyed Samuel as if he had uttered an expletive. With one hand, the officer grabbed Samuel by his arm and yanked him around, handcuffing him for the entire world to see—or at least the street.
