“Randy… Randy, where are you?”
The voice had come from the hayloft. Shaking his head, muttering about how Randy was slowing him down, he climbed up the steep stairs towards the dark hayloft. Randy was leaning against a bale of hay and wasn’t attempting to get Mary Beth her dinner at all. Instead, a whimsical smile was on his face.
“What are you doing?” Tim asked. “Firefly is down there cooling. If you are going to be idle at something, at least do it about your own horse.”
“Just come sit here a moment with me and forget that Southern temper of yours.”
Shrugging his shoulders, Tim sat down next to Randy and tapped his foot on the ground. Randy was watching him, a grin on his face, and Tim couldn’t help his body’s reaction. They were so close, Randy was only wearing his jeans, and the whole area smelled highly of sweat.
“Why do you always look at me like that?” Tim asked in annoyance, shifting away to hide his flushing face. Already, his heart had started to pound. I shouldn’t be feeling like this around Randy, he thought. He isn’t the one that I like.
“You know how I’m always calling you dumb?”
“How can I forget?”
“Well, what if to me, you are like what Norman is to you.”
“What!?” That’s impossible. You know what way that I like Norman, don’t you? That I imagine kissing him and cuddling him and having sex with him? No way that you feel such a way about me.”
“You are stupider than I thought. See here, Tim. I love you. More than that Norman ever could.”
“I don’t believe you.”
“Then it’s high time that I prove it to you!”
When Tim glanced around in confusion, Randy grasped his face and kissed him passionately, sending fire rushing down his spine. At first, Tim wasn’t sure what to make of it. Randy’s sweaty body was pressed against him, and he had to admit that he was getting a reaction. In fact, his heart was pounding harder than it ever had watching Norman ride around the ring.
After Tim had stopped being stiff and had shut his eyes, Randy deepened the kiss and caressed his dirt-ridden cheek with his fingertips. The two of them broke apart, panting. Randy was grinning.
“I always wanted to kiss my love in the hayloft,” Randy said, inhaling. “It’s the smell of horses and you. The two best smells in the world.”
“You were serious. I can’t believe you were serious.”
“Of course I was serious. You reckon that you’re the only one allowed to go around getting crushes. Let me tell you a secret. Only reason that I’m still here is you.”
“You can’t be serious.”
“Dead serious. So serious that I’d shoot Firefly if I was lying, and I’d never shoot Firefly. But the question is, do you want me? I ain’t that Norman that you are always lusting after, but I know that I could make you the happiest cowboy on earth if you’d have me. I’d always take care of you.”
For a moment, Tim paused. He had heard the term “listen to your heart” before, but he didn’t think that they had meant the statement quite as literally as now. His heart was pounding so hard in his chest that it was answering Randy’s question for him. If it got any stronger, it might burst from his chest. He didn’t know if this was a sudden change or whether his feelings had been underneath the surface the whole time, but when he nodded at Randy, he knew that he would not feel any regret.
Tim felt Randy’s hand grasp his neck, and then he stroked the pulse point there before he leaned forward and kissed him again. This time, though, Randy did not stop there. In one harsh motion, Tim was pushed backward onto the bale of hay and squirmed as the itchy bits of grass rubbed wrong against his skin.
